Munchkin Health
|
 |
Although
temperament
and size/conformation are very important to the development of this
little
breed, our concentration is also on their health and well-being.
During their introduction into the cat fancy, there was some concern
over
the Munchkin because of that which made them unique -- their
legs.
Short legs have been around for a long time in the canine world --
namely,
the much-loved breeds of Dachshund, Pekingese, Basset Hound, Cardigan
and
Pembroke Corgis as well as the English Bulldog. There have been
cases
of back problems and bowed legs in the dog fancy. But cats are
more
flexible. Also, responsible breeding and daily exercise will help
eliminate these problems. These are real concerns and should be
heeded.
 |
But
to date, there has been no documented proof of any breed-specific
problems
associated with the Munchkin within the breeding community or, more
importantly,
in the feline organizations that represent this breed. The
Munchkin
has no problem with cleaning themselves or birthing their young than
any
other breed of cat. Also, they are very adept at walking,
running,
jumping, and climbing. |
We have had Munchkins
climb straight up a nine-foot brick wall just to see what
was
there, then shinny back down to the floor without any fear of
falling.
I do not know of any other Munchkins with this ability, other than
those
from my "Mukaluk"
line, herself being a very acrobatic and agile 4-pound Domestic cat,
who
has contributed a great deal to making our Munchkins the sweet,
affectionate,
loving, little clowns that they are.
